Quality assurance in welding begins before the first arc is struck and continues after the last weld cools. Non-destructive testing (NDT) tools allow fabricators to verify weld integrity without compromising the component. Visual inspection is the most widely used NDT method, employing gauges, mirrors, and magnification to assess surface-breaking defects, bead geometry, and undercut. 

Ultrasonic testing (UT) devices transmit high-frequency sound waves through the weld to detect subsurface discontinuities, including lack of fusion, porosity clusters, and cracks that are invisible to the naked eye. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) kits reveal surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials by applying a magnetic field and ferromagnetic particles to the weld zone. 

Each method is governed by specific standards. The ISO 17635:2025 guidelines provide the general framework for NDT of fusion-welded joints in metallic materials.
