Digest #2: Welding Market News

In Armavir, a press for aluminum profiles for welding cars for high-speed rail will be built
In Armavir, it is planned to build a plant for pressing aluminum profiles, which will be used for welding car bodies intended for the high-speed railway (HSR) connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg. The car body of a high-speed train must be made of wide aluminum profiles, since without this it is impossible to ensure its acceleration and safe operation.
As noted by Alexander Simakov, General Director of the Armavir Metallurgical Company (AMK), the active development of the mechanical engineering industry in Russia in the medium term will create demand for wide aluminum profiles in the amount of up to 20 thousand tons per year, which will make the equipment profitable.

Scientists from Novosibirsk have come up with a method for joining metals without welding
Researchers from the Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have developed a unique method for joining parts that were previously incompatible due to their properties. They managed to join aluminum and steel by colliding the dissimilar materials at high speed. NSTU scientists were able to achieve the joining of dissimilar materials using a special method in the process of joint work with the Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"It was possible to combine previously "unfriendly" alloys using a technology based on high-speed impact. To accelerate the workpieces to several hundred meters per second, the scientists used a strong electromagnetic field," the university's press service explained. This method is known as magnetic pulse welding. During the welding process, the workpieces are in contact for a period of several microseconds to tens of microseconds. Thanks to this, fragile chemical bonds do not have time to form between the parts being joined, but instead a strong weld is formed.

Welding Technology Competence Center Opened in Vladimir
The center was opened on the basis of the regional technological college. "The Welding Technology Competence Center" will provide services for the manufacture of products using various types of welding: production of small architectural forms, production of loft furniture, production of prefabricated metal structures.
Director of the Vladimir Technological College Lyudmila Srebrodolskaya explained that the Center has equipment that allows the use and training of five main types of welding: classic welding with a consumable coated electrode, welding with a non-consumable electrode in a protective gas environment, fusion welding (semi-automatic); two unique types of welding that are not presented in any other institution of secondary vocational education in the Vladimir region - extrusion and manual.

Transneft has transferred research equipment to Baumanka
The Scientific and Educational Center (SEC) "Welding and Control" of the Moscow State Technical University (MSTU) named after N.E. Bauman received specialized equipment from the oil pipeline company "Transneft" for conducting research in accordance with the goals of the national project "Production and Automation Tools". The company handed over a tomograph for testing metal products, which is equipped with specialized software that allows for dynamic 3D scanning and displaying the processes of compression, tension, temperature testing and product movement. This method allows for finding cracks, voids, and also controlling the internal and external geometry without destroying the product.
In addition, the university received four robotic complexes for welding operations. They will allow Bauman engineers to explore new welding techniques and implement modern principles of additive technologies, including surfacing of special coatings, creation of unique structural elements and parts, creation of physical models for their testing, and many others.

In the laboratory "Laser and Additive Technologies" of SPbPU they are mastering domestic software
In order to expand the range of tasks to be solved, specialists from the research laboratory "Laser and Additive Technologies" of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport of SPbPU have completed online training on working with the domestic CAM system SprutCAM.
"The main goal of the training was to master the capabilities of domestic software for creating control programs for robotic laser complexes. We focused on the use of the program in modern laser technologies - laser welding, hybrid laser-arc welding, laser cladding and direct laser growth," said Maxim Larin, an engineer at the laser and additive technologies laboratory. Particular attention was paid to creating tool movement trajectories and setting up process parameters. In the practical block, students developed a program for direct laser growth of separation module elements.
